Norwich Middle School has two full-time school counselors
and a part-time school psychologist. Each counselor
is assigned to one grade level and “loops” with
the grade until they leave the MS.
School counselors coordinate counseling and provide
consultation for students in regards to school related
items. Their intent is to maximize the potential
of all students and to develop the attitude, skills
and knowledge required to succeed.
School counselors should:
- Be available to all students
- Be developmental in nature
- Address personal/social and academic/career needs
- Be an integral component of the whole education
experience including family and community connections.
- Be based on student strengths
- Be pro-active in prevention and intervention
- Require assessment on the progress of the plan
on a regular basis.
In addition to the school counselors and the psychologist,
NMS also has support from Chenango Memorial Hospital,
which provides an on-site health clinic with two social
workers.

NYS assessments are around the corner. Beginning in
the New Year, students will be tested in many curricular
areas. In order to minimize test anxiety, please
consider the following suggestions:
- See that your child is rested and eats breakfast.
- See that your child arrives at school on time.
- Encourage your child to do his/her best work possible.
- Encourage your child to think of the test as an opportunity
to show what he/she knows.
- Remind your child that the test is only one way his/her
academic performance is measured.
- Do not remove your child from school on test days
for appointments.
It is important to note that a certain degree of test
anxiety is normal and may help students prepare more
effectively, work more efficiently and remain focused
during testing.
Peer Tutoring Available
High school tutors are now available to help our 7th

or organizational strategies, may obtain a pass from
Student Services on the days they need help.
